Date : March 4, 2022 (Friday)
Location : Aichi Prefectural Zuiryo High School
Theme : Reflection on human rights via life of Zuiryo alumnus Chiune Sugihara Lecture by Chiune’s granddaughter Madoka Sugihara

Madoka Sugihara, vice chair of NPO Chiune Sugihara Visas for Life, delivered a lecture on “The Gift of Life” at Chiune’s former high school. Madoka spoke for around one hour to first- and second-year students, their teachers and the school principal. The subject provoked great interest among the students as evidenced in the active Q&A following the speech.

We hope to continue our work with schools to increase awareness of Chiune’s actions and the situation in Europe at that time. We extend our thanks to Principal Shimada and all the teachers who helped make this lecture possible.

New Year’s Greeting

January 1, 2022

A very Happy New Year.

We wish to express our deep appreciation for your support over the past year. A major exhibition on Chiune Sugihara was held at Nihombashi Takashimaya Department Store in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of his birth. The highly successful show subsequently traveled to Kyoto Takashimaya and JR Nagoya Takashimaya, where it will close on January 9. We are grateful to all of those who helped bring this exhibition to reality in the midst of the pandemic. We extend our warm thanks as well to the many visitors who came to the exhibition. We were touched by their kind comments.

The Chiune Sugihara Sempo Museum vacated its Yaesu space as scheduled last year. We are currently looking for a new location and hope to have news on that for you soon. In the interim, please visit our virtual museum on this website.

The situation remains challenging as the new year begins, but we will continue to work to ensure that Chiune’s legacy is passed on to future generations. We ask for your continued cooperation and support in 2022.

The Chiune Sugihara Sempo Museum wishes to announce a special exhibition in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of Chiune Sugihara’s birth and the 80th anniversary of his issuance of the life-saving visas.

Nearly all of the Sugihara visa recipients who arrived in Japan in 1940 were Jewish refugees from German Nazi-occupied Poland, many penniless and lacking proper documentation. They were given crucial aid by Polish Ambassador Tadeusz Romer, who worked tirelessly and selflessly to ensure they reached freedom. Up to 1,000 Jews are estimated to have made it to their final destinations safely thanks to the ambassador's determined efforts. Romer's actions were critical in ensuring that Sugihara's bold visa issuance in Lithuania was not in vain.

The exhibition will offer panels and videos examining the far-too-little-known story of Romer’s courageous activities on behalf of his countrymen. Dr Olga Barbasiewicz, one of the exhibition’s organizers, has created a special video message for the occasion. Details are as follows.

* Note that measures have been put into place to ensure your safety during the coronavirus epidemic. We ask your cooperation and understanding.

Happy New Year 2020

January 1, 2020

Happy New Year. May your 2020 be a bright, healthy and beautiful year.
The successful launch of the Chiune Sugihara Sempo Museum in Tokyo last March has attracted a great number of visitors from home and abroad, bringing us together with many old friends and new acquaintances. It has reaffirmed for us that Sugihara’s acts of compassion still hold lessons for the world today.
This year will mark the 120th anniversary of Sugihara’s birth and the 80th anniversary of his issuance of the life-saving visas. We are planning a number of lectures and exhibitions to mark this important occasion.
We hope for your continued patronage in the new year.
